Small baths are a different design problem

A 40-square-foot hall bath doesn't have the luxury of "we'll figure that out later." Every fixture placement has to work with the door swing, the vanity door swing, and the elbow room you actually need at the toilet. That's why so many DIY-adjacent contractors get small baths wrong — they focus on the finishes and miss the geometry.

What we do with small footprints

• Redraw the layout — sometimes moving the toilet by 8 inches unlocks a real vanity where there used to be a pedestal sink.
• Wall-hung fixtures — wall-mount toilets and floating vanities reclaim visual floor space.
• Large tile in small rooms — 12x24 or larger on the floor makes a small bathroom feel bigger. Fewer grout lines, more visual continuity.
• Full-height tile — running tile to the ceiling gives the room vertical scale.
• Recessed storage — in-wall niches, medicine cabinets recessed into the wall between studs, over-toilet cabinetry.
• Bigger mirror than you'd expect — the biggest mirror that fits doubles the perceived room.
• Better lighting — bright, layered lighting makes a small bath feel like it's not closing in on you.

Powder rooms specifically

A powder room is just a toilet and a sink — but it's often the only room in your house guests actually enter alone. That makes it the "make a statement" bathroom: floor-to-ceiling wallpaper, an interesting vanity, statement lighting. The good news: because there's no shower to waterproof, the whole budget goes into visible finishes. It's the highest fun-per-dollar bathroom in most Columbus homes.

What drives the cost of a small-bath project

"Small" covers a lot — from a powder-room refresh to a stud-out on a tight hall bath — so the price tracks the scope, not the square footage alone. What moves it:

• Whether there's a shower to waterproof. A powder room with just a toilet and sink skips the most labor-intensive part; a full bath with a tiled, waterproofed shower doesn't.
• How much you keep. Reusing a sound floor or the existing layout costs far less than taking the room down to the studs.
• Your finishes. In a small room the whole budget lands on what you can see — tile, vanity, lighting, mirror — so finish level matters more here, not less.
• Plumbing. Leaving fixtures where they are is simpler than moving them.

Where these come up in Columbus

Older Uptown and Wynnton homes are full of tiny original hall baths — often the second bathroom that got added in the 1950s.
