What "aging in place" actually means

It means designing (or remodeling) your bathroom so it works for you today, and still works for you in fifteen years — after a knee replacement, or a walker, or a temporary stint in a wheelchair. It's not about anticipating the worst; it's about not having to remodel again during the worst.

The three highest-impact upgrades

1. Trade the step-over tub for a walk-in shower. Alcove tubs have a 14–16-inch wall to swing a leg over — the #1 fall risk in a bathroom. A curbless walk-in shower removes it entirely.
2. Install real grab bars in real studs. Not the suction-cup kind. Proper stainless-steel grab bars, screwed into blocking, rated for 250+ lb pullout.
3. Comfort-height toilet, wider door. Standard toilets are 15" — comfort height is 17", the same as a normal chair. If the door is 24", we widen it to 32" or 36" so a walker or wheelchair actually fits.

Walk-in tubs — what they are, and when they make sense

A walk-in tub is a deep soaking tub with a watertight door in the side. You open the door, step in over a 3-inch threshold, sit down on a molded seat, close the door, and fill the tub. Most include hydrotherapy jets, heated seats, and quick-drain features.

Best for: people who genuinely want to keep bathing (not just showering) and can no longer safely step over a normal tub wall. Also excellent for arthritis and joint pain — the hydrotherapy is meaningful.

Not for everyone: you have to sit in the tub while it fills and drains, which can be five to ten cold minutes. Some people prefer a curbless walk-in shower with a folding teak bench instead — cheaper, warmer, faster.

• How much of the room changes. A standalone walk-in tub is far less than a full curbless, wider-door, comfort-height accessible remodel.
• Tub and shower features. Hydrotherapy jets, a heated seat, a thermostatic anti-scald valve, and a curbless tiled shower each add to a plain install.
• Plumbing and electrical. A walk-in tub needs both; moving fixtures or adding circuits adds work.
• Structural changes. Widening a doorway or going curbless in a slab home is more involved than surface-level updates.
